The Steelers have released cornerback William Jackson III and defensive back Carlins Platel, the team announced Friday.

Jackson III, 30, was acquired along with a 2025 conditional seventh-round pick from the Commanders for a 2025 conditional sixth-round pick at the trade deadline in Nov. 2022. Due to a back injury suffered prior to the trade, he never ended up playing a down for the Steelers, thus, both draft picks were voided. He appeared in just four games the entirety of the 2022 season.

His cap hit was set to be $12,176,461 in 2023, per Spotrac. With the savings, that brings the Steelers to a projected cap figure of $218,129,561, which is $11,097,584 under the salary cap. Like all 32 teams, the Steelers needed to be under the cap when the league's new year officially begins March 15 at 4:00 p.m.

Platel, 23, was signed as an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina in May 2022 and has yet to debut in the NFL.
