Gentry to re-sign with Steelers taken on the South Side (Steelers)

The Steelers are bringing back another one of their own.

Zach Gentry is returning to Pittsburgh. The terms of the contract have yet to be made public.

Gentry has spent his entire four-year career in Pittsburgh since the Steelers selected the former Michigan Wolverine in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. After scarcely seeing the field in his first two seasons, Gentry grew into the second tight end role behind Pat Freiermuth. At 6-8 and 265 pounds, Gentry certainly serves more in a blocking role, but can still provide the occasional play in the passing game.

I mean, good luck tackling that large of a human being once he gets moving downfield:

Gentry is the third Steelers' unrestricted free agent to re-sign with the team, joining Damontae Kazee and Larry Ogunjobi.

Chris' take: Bringing back Gentry certainly solidifies the depth at tight end. Connor Heyward certainly grew throughout his rookie year, but having Gentry back in that room provides necessary insurance at the position. More important, it takes care of the need at tight end heading into the draft. If the Steelers want to take one, it'll be a "best player available" situation. That's always the most ideal way to approach the draft.

I also would be remiss to not mention how well-liked and well-respected Gentry is in that locker room. It's easy to see through the Grillin'-N-Chillin' video series with Freiermuth or the videos that always circulate on social media of him playing catch with a fan in the stands prior to games. But, it goes a lot deeper than that.

Gentry's a smart football player. He has to be. After all, he's the emergency quarterback. His personality and work ethic earns him a ton a respect. While this move only moves the needle so much on the football field, it keeps high character in the locker room.

And, it's no secret Gentry's favorite teammate is excited about his return:
