RICHMOND, Va. -- I’m speaking purely anecdotally here, but Pittsburgh seems to be have far more “You wouldn’t believe it if I told you!” sports moments than any other city, right?

From Mario Lemieux buying the Penguins and saving them for a second time, to The Bus Jerome Bettis finally reaching the Super Bowl and winning it in his hometown, to Roberto Clemente getting his 3,000th hit in the final at-bat he’d ever see, the story around here often seems to be one that would get a movie script rejected for being too on the nose.

Such is the case with the death of the great Wilver Dornell Stargell, succumbing to a stroke just hours after a statue bearing his likeness was unveiled at PNC Park. I always think about Pops, my first favorite baseball player, on the Buccos' opening day, and I suspect I always will.
