Looking to make the cut as thunderstorm looms taken Oakmont, Pa. (Feed Article)

Players competing in the 125th U.S. Open here at Oakmont Country Club must contend with 155 other players, the forces of gravity … and Mother Nature herself. As Saturday's forecast predicts a 50% chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms, conditions could have a major impact on Moving Day.

The U.S. Open 2025 cut line rules are as follows:

"The top 60 golfers and ties after the first 36 holes of the 2025 U.S. Open will make the cut for the weekend. That's different than The Masters, PGA Championship and British Open. The Masters cut line is top 50 and ties, but the field is much smaller at Augusta National each year."

Players are currently looking to make the cut, but there have been noticeable differences between the morning and afternoon scores. As the course firms up in the late mornings, afternoon tee times are set at a slight disadvantage since the greens dry up and become much faster. The earlier groups have slightly more receptive greens thanks to residual moisture from the previous night’s dew.

While conditions are expected to remain dry today, dark clouds are already forming, with a 40% chance of thunderstorms late Friday evening. This could give players with an early tee time on Saturday an advantage, as they will be playing on softer and slower greens. Winds are also supposed to pick up out here in Oakmont, making tee shots on certain holes significantly longer and more punishing.

The projected cut line is currently hovering around +7, but with harsher winds and a possible thunderstorm, there’s a chance it could settle closer to +8 or even +9 by the end of the day. That means a lot of big names in this tournament are still in danger and aren’t guaranteed to make the cut.

Notable players near the cut line as of 4:20 p.m. on Friday:

Jordan Speith (+5)
Bryson DeChambeau (+5)
Ludvig Åberg (+7)
Patrick Reed (+7)
Rory McIlroy (+7)
Tommy Fleetwood (+8)
Min Woo Lee (+9)
Justin Thomas (+12)
Justin Rose (+12)
Shane Lowry (+13)

Players in the safe zone:

Thriston Lawrence (-6)
J.J. Spaun (-4)
Sam Burns (-3)
Viktor Hovland (-1)
Ben Griffin (-1)
Thomas Detry (-1)
Brooks Koepka (+2)
Xander Shauffele (+2)
Keegan Bradley (+3)
Jon Rahm (+4)
Collin Morikawa (+4)
Scottie Scheffler (+4)

The last U.S. Open held at Oakmont (2016) saw a cut line at +6. And with conditions this year trending even tougher, don’t be surprised to see a worse number. In fact, over the past 10 U.S. Opens, the average cut line is +5.8.

The second round isn’t just about surviving Oakmont -- it’s about outlasting the weather, the greens, and yourself. The players who advance will have earned it with every grind-it-out par and bunker scramble. By sunset, we’ll have a clearer picture of who’s left standing… and who’s heading home early.
