James Barger

Jim Barger comes to DKPittsburghSports.com in the latest – and final – stop in a long and successful career in sports journalism. Born in Pittsburgh and reared in Carroll Township, Washington County, Jim is the managing editor for DKPittsburghSports.com.

Career: Jim attended Point Park University as a journalism major and got his start in sports as a one-man sports department in Grafton, W.Va. He moved to South Florida and eventually became assistant sports editor at The Miami News, then returned home to become assistant sports editor at The Pittsburgh Press. After the newspaper strike in 1992, he was hired by the Post-Gazette and a year later was named sports editor. He was named sports editor of the Las Vegas Sun in 2003, then became executive sports editor at The Press Democrat in Santa Rosa, Calif., in 2006. He “ran away to join the circus” in 2008, signing on as an associate director in ESPN’s Stats & Information Group, and five years later returned to Santa Rosa to replace himself as executive sports editor. The newspaper hadn’t filled the vacancy.

Personal: Jim and his wife, Lori, moved back home to Pennsylvania in September 2018. They live in Bethel Park with Ethan, their youngest of four children.
