A petition asking the Penguins to change their goal song is picking up steam. In a few days, it's gained signatures from over 28,000 fans -- enough to fill the seats of PPG Paints Arena and have a few thousand left for a pretty sizable party on Fifth Ave.
The petition on Change.org, started by someone under the name "B John", asks the Penguins to use the song "Party on Fifth Ave." by Pittsburgh native and platinum hip-hop artist Mac Miller.
Miller died on Sept. 7 at age 26 from a suspected drug overdose.
"Party on Fifth Ave.", released in 2011, is a single from Miller's debut album Blue Slide Park.
The Penguins' current goal song, Andrew W.K.'s "Party Hard", came about after a fan movement started by Twitter user @psamp in the summer of 2015.
Miller represented Pittsburgh through and through. It wasn't uncommon to catch him on the sideline before Steelers games, or wearing his teams' black and gold on stage. His songs referenced Pittsburgh fixtures such as Frick Park, or Eat'n Park's smiley cookies.
"Yesterday we lost a member of our Pittsburgh family," the Penguins said in a statement after his passing. "Mac Miller was not just a part of music, he was part of our town. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and fans. Your friends on Fifth Ave will remember you fondly."
