After a one-week layoff between games, Duquesne (10-14, 5-6) returns to the court for a road test against Dayton (17-8, 7-5) Saturday afternoon. The opening tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m. We'll use this thread for in-game discussion in the comments, but for now, here are a few notes ahead of the game:
• These two teams previously went head to head on Jan. 21 and the Dukes didn't get the desired result, suffering an 82-62 loss on their home floor. KareemRozier described the setback best when he said, "From the start, they hit us in the mouth a little bit, went on a little run and we could never quite recover." Rozier and Dru Joyce III said the team lacked "juice" in that particular loss, and it all started in practice the day before. Better preparation will certainly be needed heading into a matchup against a Dayton team that has now won three of its last four games.
• With their 13-point win against Loyola Chicago last weekend, the Dukes snapped a five-game losing streak behind a balanced scoring attack that featured four double-digit scorers. Their defensive effort allowed them to win the game, though. Offensive production was non-existent in the opening seven-plus minutes of the second half and stellar defense helped them stay in it before the offense began to get going again.
• Jakub Necas was arguably the best player on the floor for Duquesne the last time out. In addition to scoring 10 points, he contributed with six rebounds, three assists, two steals and three blocks. The Dukes need more of that overall production from a guy who has really provided a steady presence in the lineup all season.
• Duquesne has to make sure Dayton doesn't get hot from three-point range. The Flyers went 9 for 13 from deep in the first half last time out and ended up relying on a 56.5% three-point shooting performance. The Dukes were also outscored by a 36-22 margin in the paint and committed turnovers at inopportune moments.
• Dayton's balance certainly presents a challenge for Duquesne defensively. The Flyers particularly showed off their depth in their last win against Fordham, as five different players scored in double figures. That didn't even include their leading scorer NateSantos (14.2 points per game this season), a transfer from Pitt who finished with seven points. Five different players are averaging more than 9.6 PPG this season.
