The Duquesne University men's basketball team opened a two-game road trip Saturday, dropping a 91-76 decision to No. 23 Saint Louis at Chaifetz Arena. The Dukes suffered their third consecutive loss, falling to 16-13 (.552) overall during the 2025-26 season, including 8-8 (.500) in the Atlantic 10.
POINTS OF EMPHASIS
Senior guard Tarence Guinyard buried a three-pointer from the wing with 4:49 to play that capped a 10-3 run and helped the Dukes close to within 76-74, but the Billikens would close the game on a 15-2 surge to secure the victory, improve to 18-0 at home and stretch their winning streak at Chaifetz Arena dating back to last season to 21. Trey Green was the deciding factor, as after a pair of empty possessions from both teams, his three-pointer with 3:38 to go gave SLU a 79-74 edge, and he connected for another one 45 seconds later to extend the lead to 82-74. Green also hit a pair at the free-throw line to get the lead back to double digits, 84-74, and Robbie Avila would seal the victory with his fifth triple of the contest to settle the final score. It was one of 16 three-pointers the Billikens buried in the win.
QUOTABLE
"The story of tonight's game is how well they shot the ball from the three-point line," head coach Dru Joyce III said. "Ultimately, the two big threes from Green, those were huge shots to help give them some room. We just weren't able to match. We could've had better execution and a little bit more poise, but I thought we played pretty hard. We fought our way back. I want to applaud my group for the energy, the intensity and how they fought throughout the game. There are some things we can take away. Our first half was really superb. The second half we could've done a better job with our ball movement."
FAST BREAK
The Dukes wasted no time getting off to a good start, jumping out to a 20-8 lead less than five minutes into the contest. Duquesne connected on each of its first four attempts from beyond the arc, including a trio from Guinyard. Junior guard Jimmie Williams also buried a triple from the corner that gave the Dukes their first double-digit edge, 18-8, and his dunk after a Saint Louis (26-3 | 14-2 Atlantic 10) turnover opened their biggest lead of the contest. The Billikens chipped away, grabbing their first lead, 28-26, with 7:13 to go before the break on a three-pointer from Ishan Sharma. Duquesne steadied, eventually owning a two-point edge at halftime, 41-39. In the second half, Dion Brown opened the scoring for SLU with a three-pointer, which ignited a 21-9 run that gave the Billikens their first double-digit cushion, 60-50, with 13:45 remaining. Avila scored 15 consecutive points during the run for Saint Louis, including a trio of three-pointers.
ROAD WARRIOR
Guinyard garnered game-high honors in scoring with 27 points, giving him six performances of at least 20 points in his 10 road games this season. He also added foru rebounds, three assists and a steal and has now scored in double figures in 11 consecutive games. Williams added 18 points and tied for team-high honors with four assists along with senior forward David Dixon, who scored 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds and also blocked three shots. In 16 conference games this season, Dixon has registered multiple blocks in 12 of those contests.
QUOTABLE
"Dave, on both ends, has found consistency throughout the season that's just given us a boost and a lift," Joyce III said. "He keeps us in games defensively with the effort in protecting the rim. He's done a terrific job with that. He's now picking up points around the basket, too. We had some really good efforts, and the game plan that we used was successful. There were just a few moments, and they are growing up moments, where you have to continue to keep your poise. You can't chase the scoreboard and think you need to match with a three or a quick shot. You have to maintain the execution of what you want to do within the system and whatever the game strategy is."
