The Dukes needed bench help with David Dixon and Jakub Necas in foul trouble —¸ Necas would foul out — and they got it from forward Alex Williams, who scored a team-high 22 points and added eight rebounds. Entering the contest, the Dayton, Ohio native averaged 7.6 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.
Guard Jimmie Williams had 17 points, five rebounds and three assists, while guard Terence Guinyard had 15 points. Despite fouls limiting him to just 18 minutes, Dixon led the Dukes with nine rebounds.
Guard Tyler Cochran was the only player for Rhode Island in double-digit points, with a game-high 34, going 9 for 14 beyond the arc, and pulling down 10 rebounds, also a game-high.
The Dukes will play No. 2 Virginia Commonwealth in the quarterfinals, Friday at 5 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on USA Network.
