Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice has been sentenced up to 30 days in jail after testing positive for marijuana, in violation of his probation. Rice was booked into a Dallas, Tex. jail on Tuesday and will remain there until June 16 at the earliest. The four-year veteran will miss Chiefs OTAs and minicamp.
Rice is on probation for five years as part of his two guilty pleas on felonies related to a multi-car crash he caused while traveling at excessive speeds, racing a friend on a Dallas-area highway. Both men fled the scene.
Rice was mandated to pay restitution for medical expenses for his victims and must serve 30 days in jail at any point during his five-year probation. The NFL suspended Rice six games for the incident.
Rice recently had a domestic violence lawsuit dismissed and the NFL, in an independent investigation of the allegations, found no violations of its personal conduct policy.
The Chiefs released a brief statement, confirming their awareness of Rice's incarceration, that they are in communication with the NFL offices but will not be commenting further on the legal matter.
My take: The talent is undeniable, but his character is ... questionable, at best. That's consecutive years now, Rice has directly impacted the team, through suspension and now the early-season program, and another pending ban by the NFL for the probation violation. The Chiefs should cut this guy, but I doubt they will.
