Celebrating 250 years of declared independence this year, it was only fitting the U.S. routed Great Britain in the World Baseball Classic, 9-1.
The U.S. trailed 1-0 into the bottom of the fifth, but a Kyle Schwarber two-run blast was part of a five-run half inning.
Great Britain scored their only run on the first batter of the game, when Red Sox minor-leaguer Nate Eaton hit a home run of Tarik Skubal. After that, there were only two hits allowed by the U.S. staff, which recorded 17 strikeouts on the day, two from David Bednar, who pitched a clean seventh inning.
The U.S. next plays Monday, taking on Mexico in a first-round game. Paul Skenes takes the mound. Game time is 8 p.m. ET.
