Sergio Garcia issued a public apology Tuesday for his poor conduct during the final round of The Masters, posting a statement on social media:
Garcia damaged the turf in the second tee box with his driver, slamming it in frustration as his tee shot traveled toward a bunker, then broke the driver's shaft as he swung it into a water cooler. Garcia was given a formal reprimand by an Augusta National official at the 4th hole.
My take: This is PR. Period. Garcia was defiant in his post-round scrum, refusing to discuss it. He's been getting hammered by fans online for his conduct and some of them, along with golf analysts and pundits, have called for his lifetime playing privileges at Augusta National, and lifetime exemption, as a former Masters champion, be revoked.
