The 108th PGA Championship got underway at Aronimink Golf Club, outside Philadelphia, and the course proved it was going ot be a tough test. The par-70 layout, which can pay as long as 7,600 yards, depending on tee placements, held a talented field at bay.
Seven golfers, including Scottie Scheffler, lead after first round 67s, and a condensed field has 42 golfers at even-par or better.
Masters champ Rory McIlroy did not start well, shooting a 4-over 74.
South Africa'a Garrick Higgo shot four-under 66 on his ball, but In the viral moment of the day, he was late for his tee time and assessed a two-stroke penalty before teeing off to begin his round. Higgo lost track of time while practicing on a nearby putting green.
My take: Higgo should buy his caddy a watch. Kind of the caddie's job to make sure his golfer is on time. This is a very difficult course — narrow fairways, heavily bunkered, difficult green complexes. No lead or deficit is too big after the first round.
