Quarterback Jacoby Brissett and the Cardinals are in a contract dispute that reports say is contentious, with the parties far apart on a reworked deal. Brissett, who was told he would be the starter this season, the second year of a two-year deal, is scheduled to make $4.88 million, with $1.5 million guaranteed. Gardner Minshew II was signed as the backup on a one-year deal, and his contract guarantees $5.1 million. The team also drafted Carson Beck in the third round of April's draft.
Brissett is planning to hold-in should the negotiations continue to linger into June's minicamp. Reports say he seeks a fully guaranteed deal in the $12- to $15-million range.
Brissett started 12 games for Arizona last year, with starter Kyler Murray missing all by five games to a foot injury. The team was 1-11 in those starts, but Brissett performed well. He completed 65 percent of his passes for 3,366 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Brissett, entering his 11th season, has never had a winning season as a starter for the Patriots, Colts, Dolphins, Browns and Cardinals, posting a career mark of 20-45.
My take: The Cardinals aren't serious about winning or they wouldn't be dealing with Brissett as the starter. They're in the same division as the Seahawks, Rams and 49ers. Offer a fair deal that at least guarantees him a bit more than Minshew, then tell him to pound sand if he wants to hold them hostage. It costs $1.5 million to say goodbye. Go with Minshew, Beck as the backup and Kedon Slovis, who is currently fourth on the depth chart.
