Aston Villa won the UEFA Europa League final Wednesday, beating Freiburg of Germany's Bundesliga, 3-0, at Beşiktaş Park in Istanbul, Turkey. It is Villa's first European championship trophy in 42 years, when they won the European Cup, what is now the UEFA Champions League, in 1982.
Speaking of the UCL, Villa have now earned a place in it next season, advancing right to the group stage, which provides millions of euros and increased percentages of broadcast revenues.
Villa got off to a 2-0 first-half advantage with late tallies by Youri Tielemans and Emiliano Buendía, then put it out of range with some tactical precision in the 58th minute, finished off by Morgan Rogers:
My take: About as boring a championship final one will see — Freiburg was absent, a virtual no-show. Kudos to the Villans, one of the oldest clubs in English football (1874). Big party in Birmingham tonight.
