Real Madrid has levied €500,000 fines to players Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni for a locker-room fight that left Valverde with a head laceration and a concussion that will keep him out of Sunday's "Clásico" vs. FC Barcelona. The fight was related to physical play on the training ground.
In a statement, the team said "During the [meeting with management], the players expressed their deep regret for what happened and apologized to each other.
"They have also apologized to the club, their teammates, the coaching staff and the fans, and both have made themselves available to Real Madrid to accept whatever sanction the club deems appropriate.
"Given these circumstances, Real Madrid has decided to impose a financial penalty of five hundred thousand euros on each player, thus concluding the corresponding internal procedures."
Valverde makes €16.5 million this season and Tchouaméni makes €12.5 million.
My take: This is still a significant fine, despite the players' salaries. Enough to make them adjust their behavior. It would be nice to see teams in other professional leagues make stances with players that certain conduct is unacceptable, particularly when the league fails to act adequately or at all.
