Mikaela Shiffrin answered all her critics in an emphatic fashion Wednesday, dominating the women's slalom at the Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre to win gold by an stunning 1.50 seconds. Camille Rast of Switzerland took silver and the bronze went to Sweden's Anna Swenn Larsson.
Shiffrin set the tone on her first run, besting the field by over a full second, then laid down the best second run of the field by nearly a half-second. The win was historic: Shiffrin became the first U.S. skier to ever win three gold medals and she join s Eric Heiden, Shaun White and Bonnie Blair as the only U.S. Winter Olympians with three or mor gold medals.
Shiffrin, 30, had failed to medal in eight consecutive Olympic events after taking gold in the Super G in 2018. The unquestioned best women's slalom skier for over a decade, Shiffrin's failure to medal in the event at the Olympics since Sochi 2014 had been confounding.
