The structure of the deal includes a $14-million signing bonus — $8 million after MLB approved the deal, and $6 million in 2028. He gets $1 million in 2027 salary, $ 7 million in 2028, $16 million in 2029, and between $21 million and $23 million through 2034.
McGonigle, 21, who has played both shortstop and third base, is slashing .311/.417/.492 through 17 games, with six doubles, a home run and eight RBIs, with 11 walks against just eight strikeouts.
My take: Makes sense. Like Konnor Griffin, it secures a good player at a reasonable price. Smart structure on the deal too, taking into account no baseball in 2027, and an anticipation of a salary cap with the escalating annual salaries.
