Desperate for starting pitching, the Blue Jays reached out to three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer, who helped the Jays to the playoffs and pitched in the World Series. The deal is reported to be one year at $3 million.
Scherzer, 41, has pitched only 128 innings combined over the last two seasons, slowed by back, shoulder and thumb injuries. He expressed to the Jays his desire to play in 2026, but there was no rotation spot until Shane Bieber was ordered to rest indefinitely this week with forearm fatigue.
My take: There's not much left of that legendary arm, a Hall of Fame career skidding to an eventual stop. The price is right, so anything positive out of him will justify the cost. He can't be relied on, though, to be anything more than a stopgap. If Bieber needs to be shut down for an extended period, The Jays should be in the market for a back-of-the-rotation starter.
