Major League Soccer has issued lifetime bans to two former Columbus Crew players for life after an investigation found they gambled on the team and each other.
Derrick Jones, 29, and Yaw Yeboah, 28, both Ghanian nationals were found to have placed bets on the Crew and at least one instance where they each placed a bet, and informed other bettors to do the same, that Jones would get a yellow card in game against Red Bulls New York, which Jones did receive with a hard foul in the first half.
League commissioner Don Garber released a statement after announcing the bans, saying “Major League Soccer remains steadfast in its commitment to match integrity. The league will continue to enforce its policies, enhance education efforts, and advocate for the elimination of yellow card wagering in all states to protect the integrity of our competition for clubs, players, and fans.”
Neither player is currently in MLS — Yeboah is playing professionally in China and Jones is available to sign anywhere after his contract was declined after the 2025-26 season.
My take: A prop bet on a yellow card is the easiest thing to rig, though not as easy as a first-pitch ball. These sports and sports books need to eliminate these easiest things to fix.
