The Atlantic Coast Conference has come out in support of a 24-team College Football Playoff.
Commissioner Jim Phillips said, "When you're leaving national-championship-contending teams out of the playoff, you don't have the right number. We suffered through it with Florida State when the field was four, and I know other schools have suffered for it, and I've said this very directly. Notre Dame was a CFP-worthy team this year.
"If you're going to ask presidents and chancellors and boards to continue to invest in their football programs, it's really important that they have hope, that they have an opportunity at the beginning of the season to get into the playoff."
My take: I'm not against this in principle. The FCS has had a 24-team playoff every year since 2013. The top-eight seeded teams have a bye and all others play each other at the better team's home field. That drops it to 16, with the seeded teams then hosting the first-round winners at their stadium. The remaining eight teams (in FBS) would play four big bowl games, then the semis in the two other big bowls, then the championship game. Where Phillips is wrong is in thinking the ACC was any good last year, and that any team beyond Miami deserved a spot. His general point is that conference champion Duke would have a spot.
