The Maple Leafs continue to befuddle hockey fans, with Keith W. Pelley, president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, announcing the hiring of John Chayka as the team's general manager, replacing the fired Bruce Treliving.
Chayka had a tumultuous tenure as GM of the Coyotes, with the NHL finding he broke rules around prospect testing which forced the franchise to forfeit a 2020 second-round pick and its 2021 first-round pick.
Chayka was then suspended for the 2021 season by commissioner Gary Bettman after it was discovered he violated tampering rules by talking to other teams about job opportunities during non-tampering windows, with Chayka making the advances to other teams, which rebuffed his interest and reported him to the NHL. Chayka resigned in July 2020, due to a rift with management. He has been in the private sector since.
Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun confronted Pelley during the introductory press conference, challenging Pelley and the organization's decision making:
My take: "We talked to different people." Wow. Good for Simmons. This is a terrible decision by the Leafs. Chayka's reputation is trash and he is not an honest broker. How does the organization hire a man who can't be trusted by other teams?
