The Hurricanes are heading to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2006, after pasting the Canadiens, 6-1, in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, N.C., winning the series 4-1.
The Canes got goals from six different skaters and wasted no time getting rolling, scoring three times in the first period. The first, by Taylor Hall had the potential to be controversial, when the Habs challenged for goaltender interference on Logan Stankoven, but the goal was upheld. By the end of the period, any potential controversy was gone, with the game result no longer in doubt.
The Habs had trouble getting shots on goal again — the final total of 24 is deceiving — mustering only 11 shots on goal by the time the Canes made it 5-0 at 18:02 of the second period.
The Canes will host the Golden Knights in Game 1 on Tuesday, June 2.
My take: What a drubbing. One wondered if the Canes were just rusty in Game 1, and that proved to be the case. Even the double-overtime game wasn't that exciting because the Habs couldn't get shots on goal. Pretty non-competitive the last four games, all in all. Not the matchup anyone expected for the SCF.
