Johannes Høsflot Klæbo became the first person to win six gold medals in one Winter Olympics, winning the cross country 50-kilometer Mass Start Classic Saturday at the Tesero Cross-Country Skiing Stadium in Val di Fiemme, Italy, overtaking teammate Martin Nyenget with a tremendous climb just before the finish. He overtakes U.S. speed skater Eric Heiden, who won five gold medals in Lake Placid — Heiden still holds the Winter Olympics record for individual-event golds in one Games.
Entering the hill side-by-side, Klæbo surged past Nyenget, opening a gap greater than 10 seconds as he hit the downhill into the finish line:
Klæbo won gold in four individual events: 20 km Skiathalon; individual sprint classic; 10 km individual start free; and the mass start. His two team gold medals came in the team sprint and the 4 x 7.5-kilometer relay.
Klæbo's dominance helped Team Norway to two other Winter Olympic records: Most gold medals in one Games (18) and most overall medals in one Games (40).
My take: To put Klæbo's week in perspective, it's like winning the 100 meters in track, the 4x100 relay, the 400-meter hurdles and the marathon. Crazy.
