Gerrit Cole pitched his first major-league game in 569 days and it seemed like old times for the 2023 Cy Young winner, tossing six scoreless innings for the Yankees against the Rays, yielding two hits and three walks while striking out two.
Cole last pitched on September 26, 2024, throwing 6.2 scoreless innings against the Orioles. Cole was limited to 17 starts that season due to forearm tightness. He was injured in spring training in 2025, pulled form an outing after he gave up five runs in 1.1 innings.
Cole sought several opinions befoer deciding to have elbow ligament reconstruction surgery — never identified as a Tommy John repair. Cole had been on schedule since spring training to debut Friday night, reaching the goal without any setbacks.
Cole left the Yankees a 1-0 lead but the Rays went on to win 4-2.
My take: So good to see him back and healthy. The game's better with him in it.
