The Presidents Trophy curse strikes again. The Avalanche and their 121 regular-season points are booking flights home for the summer after the Golden Knights swept them in the Wester Conference Final, winning Game 4 Tuesday, 2-1, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Goals by Mark Stone and the game-winner by Cole Smith in the third period, gave Vegas a two-goal cushion, Gabriel Landeskog scored with Avs goalie Mackenzie Blackwood pulled, but the Avs were unable to find the equalizer.
The Golden Knights have reached the Stanley Cup Final for the third time in their nine-season existence. They now await the winner of the Canadiens–Hurricanes series.
My take: The golf gods must be crazy. Anyway, what a waste of a remarkable regular season. Injuries certainly played a factor for the Avs' two best players —Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar — but everyone's playing hurt right now. Carter Hart of Darkness gets rewarded; so does the media-hating John Tortorella.
