The Hurricane did not play for 11 days, an NHL-record layoff between playoff rounds. It showed Thursday night as the Canadiens, fresh off a Game 7 win over the Sabres, pasted the Canes early in a 6-2 win at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, N.C., in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final.
Seth Jarvis scored just 33 seconds into the game, sending the home crowd into a frenzy, but Cole Caufield quieted them a bit, evening the game for the Habs just 27 seconds later. 10 minutes after that it was dead silent, with the Habs up 4-1, the last a slick breakaway score by Ivan Demidov:
My take: The Habs just punched the rusty Canes in the face. Simple as that. The Canes got to their game eventually and it was something of a contest after that. As for Frederik Andersen, no excuses on that breakaway. He's seen that move from Demidov before:
