The Canadian Hockey League has suspended Chicoutimi Saguenéens defenseman Jordan Tourigny for the remainder of the Memorial Cup, following his repeated kicking/stomping on the skate boot of Kitchener Rangers center Christian Humphreys, in Tuesday's 3-2 loss.
The suspension came at the recommendation of the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety, which determines discipline for the CHL.
Tourigny was apologetic ... to his team, releasing the following statement Wednesday on social media: "I am sorry not to be able to continue the tournament and help my teammates,” he said. “At no point did I touch or intend to hit his skate boot or his ankle. My intention was only to reach the blade of his stick. I regret using my skate in that type of situation and I am aware that this kind of action is prohibited. I am relieved to learn that he is not injured and that he will be able to play in Sunday’s final.”
In the game, Tourigny received a five-minute kicking major and a match penalty for his actions. Contrary to Tourigny's statement, Humphreys' status for Sunday's final is still unknown. Kitchener head coach Jussi Ahokas said Wednesday that Humphreys is still being evaluated.
My take: How about, I dunno, 20 games? This wasn't accidental, it was an intent to injure. He won't even admit he did anything wrong ("At no point did I touch ..."). No apology to Humphreys. If his skate blade hits a certain way, Humphreys' playing days could have ended. Chicoutimi may only have one game left, three max.
