Serena Williams will chase Grand Slam singes title No. 24, after the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club confirmed that Williams will be in the Wimbledon field as a wild card entry.
Williams, 44, recently return to professional tennis playing doubles in two grass-court tournaments. During interviews, she's indicated she was not yet in playing condition for singles play, if that was even something she was interested in. Williams has not played a sanctiuoned singles tournament since the 2022 U.S. Open.
The tournament begins June 29. Williams is a seven-time winner in the singles event there, the last in 2016, second only to Martina Navratilova's nine. Williams has also won the Wimbledon's ladies doubles championship six times with her sister Venus Williams. There is no report whether or not Serena will be in the Wimbledon doubles draw, as well.
My take: Exciting news. It may be too soon to consider her any threat at Wimbledon, the fastest surface of the Grand Slam events (though i wouldn't put anything past her), but might she be prepping for a competitive run at the U.S. Open in August?
