Dolphins star defensive tackle Manny Fernandez, who won two Super Bowls with the Dolphins in the 1970s as part of the famed "No-name Defense" and was an integral part of the perfect-record team in 1972, has died. He was 79. No cause of death was given, but reports say the family is expected to have him examined for CTE.
Mr. Fernanadez was an undrafted free agent out of Utah in 1968, but made the Dolphins on a training-camp tryout. He was a dominant force in the middle of Miami's defensive line for eight seasons, retiring due to injury after the 1975 season.
Mr. Fernandez was a member of the Dolphins' Super Bowl VII and Super Bowl VIII wins, punctuating the former with a 17-tackle performance. he was placed on the Dolphins' Ring of Honor in 2014.
