Quinn Hughes rifled a shot off the post behind Jacob Markstrom in overtime to give the United States a 2-1 win over Sweden in a tightly played game. The U.S. now advances to a semifinal game against No. 3 Slovakia.
There wasn't a lot of room on the ice in regulation, as both teams played a tight-checking game. There were plenty of shots but few high-danger chances. One, though, came off the stick of Dylan Larkin, who deflected a point shot from Jack Hughes past Markstrom to give the U.S. a lead it held until Mika Zibanejad scored off a cross-ice feed from Lucas Raymond, with the goalie pulled and 1:31 remaining.
Puck drops Friday against Slovakia at 3:10 p.m. ET. The game is listed on USA Network but will likely be moved to NBC. It will stream on Peacock. Slovakia is 3-1, its only loss 5-3 to Sweden to end the preliminaries. They defeated Germany 6-2 to advance to the semifinals.
My take: Another slow start for the U.S. but they did well defending and Connor Hellebuyck was stellar, yielding only a perfect shot from Zibanejad. The U.S. responded well, getting two chances before the horn sounded in the third, then had all six shots in overtime. Now they face a tough Slovakia side. Sweden? What a disappointment. They have an exceptional roster and were considered gold-medal contenders. Now they leave with nothing.
