The Avalanche came out and exploded to a 3-0 lead in the first period of Game 3 against the the Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, but the home team stormed back to tie it in the second period and Tomas Hertl scored the game-winner in the third period of a 5-3 Vegas win, putting Colorado on the brink of elimination, down three games to none.
Once Hertl game Vegas the lead, the clamp went down on the Avs, who managed just seven shots in the final 20 minutes — four with the goalie pulled at the end and with a nearly 15-minute gap between shots at one point.
My take: Vegas has the better goaltending; Scott Wedgewood was just 'meh' again for the Avs and that's not good enough as you get deeper into the playoffs. The Avs got Cale Makar back. (and Vegas Mark Stone), but Nathan MacKinnon is still hobbled by a knee injury suffered blocking a shot in Game 2, a shell of himself without his trademark speed. Can the Avs win four in a row? Yes. Will they? No. The vile Carter Hart, who does not deserve good things, has a 2.30 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage through 15 playoff games.
