Quarterback Brendan Sorsby has announced he is leaving Texas Tech and will enter the NFL Supplemental Draft hours after the Big 12 Conference filed a federal lawsuit seeking support for its right to sanction Texas Tech and Sorsby, under its by-laws.
His decision might have been mitigated by the fact that Texas Tech is letting him leave with all NIL money he's been paid to date and will continue to provide resources to support him with his gambling addiction.
The date of the NFL Supplemental Draft has not been announced, but it will be in July. Declaration to be eligible for it is June 22.
My take: Well, I was wrong earlier today. Sorsby did the right thing ... kind of. He suffers no real consequence because eventually a judge was going to allow the Big 12 to ban him. And he kept the money. And he gets all the supports from Texas Tech for his gambling addiction, but without any consequences if he gambles again. In a way, Sorsby was the biggest adult in a roomful of bad adults. Texas Tech was willing to destroy FBS football to win football games in 2026. It was nothing more than that. Complete selfishness. In the end, they destroyed their reputation and relationships inside the conference and beyond. Other conferences might still cancel or not schedule future games with TTU programs — they were never mad at Sorsby, just incensed at the administrators and head coach at TTU. That's not gong away anytime soon.
