UCLA has a legendary men's basketball tradition, but perhaps the women can start one of their own. Sunday, they walloped three-time national champions South Carolina to win their first NCAA Championship in program history, 79-51, at Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix, Ariz. The finished their season 37-1.
UCLA never trailed in the game and had a lead from 1:22 into the first quarter through to the end. They shot well form the field, sinking 42 percent from beyond the arc (8 of 17), while stymying the Gamecocks into a dreadful 29 percent from the field. The Bruins also out-rebounded South Carolina, 49-37.
My take: Congrats to the Bruins. Good to see some new blood at the top. The women's game needs some variety, then those programs need to sustain while other programs grow. 12 teams capable of winning it all every year wold be a good target to hit soon.
