Jim Rutherford announced after the conclusion of the NHL Draft Lottery that he will be stepping down as the Canucks' president of hockey operations, a job which currently incudes interim general manager duties, following the 2026 NHL Draft on June 26 and 27.
Rutherford, now 77, said he will remain involved with the organizations, saying he will help hire the next general manger — Patrik Allvin was fired on April 17 after four seasons — taking on an advisory role while being an alternate governor for the franchise.
“This is something I've thought about anyways for a couple of years, but it's time for me to do that," Rutherford said. "I feel bad that I have to do it at such a young age, but I decided to do it anyways.”
Rutherford was hired by Vancouver as director of hockey ops in December, 2021.
My take: He certainly doesn't owe the game anything. Good to see him doing ti on his own terms. The Canucks can use some fresh blood in the front office anyway.
