And then there were four. The UEFA Champions League semifinals are set following Wednesday's second-leg match between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, which Bayern won 6-4 on aggregate, following a 4-3 win at Fußball Arena München, in Munich, Germany.

My take: Quite a match and the two-leg quarterfinal lived up to its hype. Tough to swallow for Real, getting that gift from Neuer, but Bayern was the better side and has played like it throughout the tournment.

A piece in The Financial Times is reporting that Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund is soon to announce it is pulling its funding for LIV Golf. All of LIV Golf's executives have been called to a meeting in New York, according to UK publication The Telegraph.

Since the fund is state-owned, the article said PIF could use the ongoing Gulf conflict to activate the force majeure clause and pull the tour's funding immediately.

Reports surfaced Wednesday that players and vendors had not been paid for a few weeks, indicating the tour is not self-sustaining. The departures of Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed ahead of the season decreased star power, and Phil Mickelson's indefinite absence from golf due to a family matter, leaves just Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau as the only top draws.

DeChambeau was contemplating a move back to the PGA Tour, but balked when he objected to the conditions placed on Koepka under the tour's new Returning Member Program.

An announcement is expected Thursday or Friday. The tour is in Mexico City this week.

My take: This is just informed speculation at this point, with single-source reporting. However, once the PGA Tour incorporated many of the attractive elements of LIV Golf, this became inevitable. Also making a for-profit arm of the PGA Tour, including player ownership and profit sharing, it became even more vibrant. U.S. players, in particular, have complained about the international travel of LIV's global tour, with significant time being spent away from families — Koepka's main reason for returning. Whether it shutters immediately, is supported through the current season, or continues in some form (even its current form), it will never be anything more than a minor tour, whose low-level competition will cripple world-ranking points, despite wins.

The Tigers love what they're seeing from rookie infielder Kevin McGonigle, signing him to an eight-year, $150 million contract extension.

The structure of the deal includes a $14-million signing bonus — $8 million after MLB approves the deal, and $6 million in 2028. He gets $1 million in 2027 salary, $ 7 million in 2028, $16 million in 2029, and between $21 million and $23 million through 2034.

McGonigle, 21, who has played both shortstop and third base, is slashing .311/.417/.492 through 17 games, with six doubles, a home run and eight RBIs, with 11 walks against just eight strikeouts.

My take: Makes sense. Like Konnor Griffin, it secures a good player at a reasonable price. Smart structure on the deal too, taking into account no baseball in 2027, and an anticipation of a salary cap with the escalating annual salaries.

According to an Associated Press report, entering the NHL's final few regular-season games, goaltender save-percentage is below .900 for the first time since 1994, all while shots on goal are down, to 27.8 per game, the lowest since 1998, and goals per game remain over six for the third consecutive season.

More goals on fewer shots sounds counterintuitive, but one explanation referenced is all-around better size, speed and skill, with more unselfish play resulting in more passing to set up higher-percentage scoring chances, fewer attacks straight down the slot, and more lateral play near the goal.

The report cited gambling as another probable influence, with official scorers and the league being stingy on shots, ensuring they are actually on goal as opposed to what a goalie might stop and catch — and used to get credit for — that might be going wide or over the bar, making sure shots-on-goal are accurate for those gambling the over-under.

My take: One need only look at tonight's Penguins–Blues game — 12 goals on 53 shots. That's .774.

The Athletic NFL reporter Dianna Russini has resigned amid an ongoing scandal over an alleged intimate relationship with Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel.

“I have covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout my career, and I stand behind every story I have ever published,” Russini wrote in her resignation letter. “When the Page Six item first appeared, The Athletic supported me unequivocally, expressed confidence in my work and pride in my journalism. For that I am grateful. In the days that followed, unfortunately, commentators in various media have engaged in self-feeding speculation that is simply unmoored from the facts.

“Moreover, this media frenzy is hurtling forward without regard for the review process The Athletic is trying to complete. It continues to escalate, fueled by repeated leaks, and I have no interest in submitting to a public inquiry that has already caused far more damage than I am willing to accept. Rather than allowing this to continue, I have decided to step aside now—before my current contract expires on June 30. I do so not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career.”

Photos posted by Page Six showed Russini and Vrabel sharing an embrace and appearing in-water pool chairs side-by-side at Ambiente Sedona resort in Arizona. Vrabel, who is married, and Russini have vehemently denied a romantic relationship. The two were on separate trips — Russini with two friends, Vrabel with two at a different resort. Vrabel's group drove two hours to join Russini's for the day, according to both parties.

My take: Everyone involved said that it was just a fun day among friends. No reason not to believe them. It was a bad look for Russini, though, blurring that line between a reporter and those she covers.

Sergio Garcia issued a public apology Tuesday for his poor conduct during the final round of The Masters, posting a statement on social media:

Garcia damaged the turf in the second tee box with his driver, slamming it in frustration as his tee shot traveled toward a bunker, then broke the driver's shaft as he swung it into a water cooler. Garcia was given a formal reprimand by an Augusta National official at the 4th hole.

My take: This is PR. Period. Garcia was defiant in his post-round scrum, refusing to discuss it. He's been getting hammered by fans online for his conduct and some of them, along with golf analysts and pundits, have called for his lifetime playing privileges at Augusta National, and lifetime exemption as a former Masters champion, be revoked.
