In a thrilling match the Democratic Republic of Congo, appearing in its first World Cup match in 52 years, managed a 1-1 draw with perennial top side Portugal at NRG Stadium in Houston. DRC's goal a beautifully struck header by Yoane Wissa, was the nation's first goal scored in its World Cup history:
DRC could not match Portugal's skill, so it defended hard and did so very well, frustrating Ronaldo and Co. to only three shots on target despite them possessing at 75 percent. DRC was very dangerous on the counter, earning one less shot attempt (8) than Portugal had all match.
My take: First goal, first point, and doing so against one of the world's top teams? A day the DRC will never forget. An exciting match
• In the evening's closing match, Uzbekistan made its World Cup debut, the first central Asian nation to make it, scoring it's first goal in its first match, in a 3-1 loss to Colombia at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. It wasn't much of a match overall, with Colombia dominating play and Uzbekistan missing out of prime chances with free kicks, as service was long all match, generating one scoring chance despite nie set pieces in the finishing third.
My take: A triumph for Uzbekistan, regardless of result. Colombia were dangerous throughout. A big win as they lead Group K by two points, over Portugal and DR Congo.
