A shocking gold medal for the United States in mixed aerials skiing set an new record for Team USA, winning an 11th gold medal in one Games, besting a collective 10 from the Salt Lake City Games in 2002.
Christopher Lillis, who won gold in mixed aerials at its inaugural event in Beijing 2022, joined new American teammates Connor Curran and Kaila Kuhn to upset heavily favored China, which struggled to land its jumps, while the American trio was very clean in its execution.
The U.S. can bump that total to 12, if the men can beat Canada in hockey Sunday.
With 12 silver and nine bronze medals, the U.S. has smashed a team record for total medals in a Winter Games outside North America, with 32. The previous mark in that category came in Sochi 2014 (28) and will increase to 33 Sunday, following the men's hockey final.
My take: It's impressive. There are so few events in comparison to the Summer Olympics, and the U.S. is only competitive in half of them, not having much of a Nordic events development program. Several medal favorites didn't medal, either, with strong performances by several young athletes, getting their first experiences, picking up the slack.
