The Kings are three points out of play off position in the NHL's Western Conference, but a frustrated front-office fired head coach Jim Hiller after the Kings ended a five-game losing streak Saturday with a 2-0 win over the Flames. Assistant head coach D.J. Smith has been named interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
Hiller was in his second season with the Kings, finishing second in the Pacific Division last season but losing in six games to the Oilers in the first round of the playoffs. The Kings are currently 24-21-14, making Hiller's record as head coach 72-46-23.
My take: Nothing surprises in the NHL, the most fickle league when it comes to head coaches. Not to say Hiller was successful this season, winning just 24 of 59 games and struggling after acquiring Artemi Panarin from the Rangers.
