The Seidler family have agreed to terms on a sale of the Padres to Chelsea F.C. owner José E. Feliciano and his wife, Kwanza Jones, at a valuation of $3.9 billion. That amount is the highest in MLB history, dwarfing the $2.4 billion Steve Cohen paid for the Mets in 2020.
The late Peter Seidler purchased the franchise for $800 million in 2012, After he passed away unexpectedly in 2023, his brother, John Seidler, took over team operations for the Seidler family, announcing in November 2025 an intent to sell.
My take: Chelsea fans are not enamored of Feliciano since he took ownership in 2023. The team did win both the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup in 2025, but Premier League form has been inconsistent despite huge investment. Once unbeatable at Stamford Bridge, they've won fewer than 50 percent of their home games during his ownership tenure and the club has had five managers in his 3.5 years. Will he similarly meddle with the Padres? If he's smart, he'll just cut the checks and let the baseball people do their thing. They've earned it.
