Alex Newhook scored at 11:22 of overtime of Game 7, beating the Sabres 3-2 at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, sending the Canadiens to the Eastern Conference Final against the Hurricanes.
The Canadiens were on the backfoot for most of the final 50 minutes of the game, with Buffalo pressuring down 2-0 after the first period. The Sabres attempted 91 shot on the night but getting just two of 39 shots on goal past Habs netminder Jakub Dobeš.
Newhook made history, becoming the first person to ever score Game 7 overtime goals in one playoffs. He joins Nathan Horton as the only two players to score game-deciding goals in Game 7s in one playoff, with Horton doing it to for the Bruins in 2011.
My take: Dobeš was the real star, though Newhook certainly deserves his flowers for his game-winner. The Sabres were relentless and were so dominant that it appeared inevitable they would win in regulation. Anything can happen in overtime. ... like this, of course:
How is that relevant? The least offensive-defenseman beat the greatest goalie of all time. In their history, The Sabres are now 1-7 in Game 7s. Derek Plante is the exception to the rule, beating the Senators in 1997.
