Kentucky derby winner Golden Tempo won the 158th Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga, N.Y., in 2:03.49. He beat Commandment by 1¼ lengths and race-favorite Renegade showed.
Just like the Kentucky Derby, Golden Tempo came from the very back to win, with jockey José Ortiz starting his charge from 15 lengths back. Trainer Cherie DeVaux became the first woman to win multiple Triple Crown races.
This is the third and final year the race was held at Saratoga, as Belmont Park has been undergoing major renovations. Because of track configuration, Saratoga can only hold the race at 1.25 miles, the same distance as the Kentucky Derby, instead of the traditional 1.5 miles, the longest of the Triple Crown races.
My take: It's been a great Triple Crown season. If the races weren't so bunched together, we might end up with another Triple Crown winner, but until that happens, owners and trainers will protect Derby-winning assets.
