Blue Jays right fielder Jesús Sánchez was forced to leave Sunday's game against the Orioles after a ball thrown by a fan from the outfield seats hit him in the right hand.
Sánchez avoided severe injury, as X-rays showed no wrist fractures. The Blue Jays have listed him as day-to-day with severe swelling.
Jays manager John Schneider said there was nothing malicious about the incident, telling media postgame that Sánchez was having a playful exchange with a 12-year-old boy in the stands. When Sánchez made a gesture with his glove, the boy mistook it for a sign to play catch and threw the ball to Sánchez, who was turning away when it hit him.
The boy was removed from the stadium by security per ballpark safety protocols.
My take: That's the weirdest of incidents. Too bad a young kid had to be booted from the ballpark. Hopefully, no ban is involved, considering the circumstances.
