Second-seed Alexander Zverev won his first Grand Slam event, taking the French Open in a five-set win over 10-seed Flavio Cobolli — 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1 — shedding the long-held moniker as the best men's player to not win a Grand Slam title.
The match lasted four hours and 16 minutes and saw some thrilling tennis in middle sets. Cobolli, however, seemed to lose something after taking a bathroom break following his fourth-set tiebreaker triumph, losing the first four games of the final set, often with unforced errors on what should have been easy finishes.
My take: Great for Zverev. The German, when healthy, has been a top-five ranked player for nearly a decade. He'd been so close several times and it's good to see him finally break through. Terrific tournament.
