Things got heated once again between Red Sox catcher Willson Contreras and the Brewers, after Contreras was hit in the hand on a pitch from Brandon Woodruff, the sixth time in his career he's been plunked by Woodruff and the 24th time he's been hit by the Brewers, dating back to his 10 seasons with the Cubs and Cardinals:
Contreras seems to have reached the limit of his patience, saying postgame, “They always say, ‘I’m not trying to hit you.’ That gets old. So, next time they hit me again, I’m going to take one of them out. That’s the message.”
My take: It's no coincidence that Contreras has been hit by Brewers pitching 20 percent of all his HBPs — clearly something there. But Contreras also sets up on top of the plate. Let's see if he follows through if it happens over the next two games, or if it just blows over ahead of next season, as the Brewers and Red Sox just meet three times a year. What he might want to focus on is winning a game — the Red Sox an MLB-worst 2-8 after losing to the Brewers, 8-6; Milwaukee improved to an MLB-best 8-2.
