One can be forgiven for not knowing who Johannes Høsflot Klæbo is. The Norwegian cross-country skier is not a known name in the the majority of sporting circles, but he is now the all-time leader in Winter Olympic gold medals, earning his fifth of Milano Cortina Games in the men's team sprint Wednesday, tying former U.S. speed skater Eric Heiden for most in one Winter Olympics and joining Michael Phelps (23) as the only two Olympians to win 10 or more gold medals.
The ONLY two Olympians in history who have won 10 or more gold medals: Michael Phelps and Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo. 🥇 pic.twitter.com/uGaG9d4XpA
Klæbo can break Heiden's Winter Olympic record if he wins the men's 50K mass-start event Saturday.
My take: I had a faint recollection of Klæbo as he was being announced as the winner in races early in these Games. It's difficult to imagine him being a legend, but Norway's going to build statues of this guy. Nordic sport countries know Klæbo like we know Magic, Mario, Mays and Montana.
