Head coach Mauricio Pochettino announced Saturday that defender Tim Ream has been named captain of the United States Men's National Team for the World Cup. Ream has been captain for 16 of Pochettino's 23 matches at the helm.
Pochettino said, "I am so grateful that [Ream] is with us and because [he] was a great captain, not only on the field, maybe more important off the field. And I think he has the experience, he has the capacity to be the leader that we want, the positive leader acting and reflecting on the field, off the field.
"As you know, for me ... one of the most important things is to connect with the player, is to connect through the player that [has] experience, and I think he's amazing."
Ream, 38, has 80 caps for the U.S. since making his first appearance in 2010. This will be Ream's second World Cup, after playing all four games for the U.S. at Qatar 2022.
My take: Quite a compliment for Ream. There were several to choose from on the veteran squad. Christian Pulisic and Tyler Adams have each worn the armband 10 or more times for the USMNT. Ream definitely holds respect among his teammates, so it's not just a Poch thing, and his experience is undeniable — 598 combined club and international matches.
