The Dodgers spent $69 million over the next three seasons to solidify the back end of the bullpen, bringing former Mets closer Edwin Diaz into the fold. Now they'll have to wait and see if or when he'll pitch again this season.
Diaz, 32, will have surgery to remove loose bodies from his pitching elbow and has been ruled out through at least the first half of the season. He missed the 2023 season with Tommy John surgery.
Diaz was rocked in five appearances this season, yielding seven runs in four innings pitched, including three in each of his last two outings, which were nine days apart after he complained of elbow stiffness.
My take: This would be devastating news for about 25 other teams, but the Dodgers can just buy what they done have. They'll see how it goes without Diaz, but if it starts costing them games late, a transaction will be made.
