Hall of Fame manager Bobby Cox, who led the Braves to five National League pennants and a World Series championship in 1995, has died. He was 84. No cause of death was reported, though Mr. Cox suffered several health complications following a stroke in 2019.
The braves released the following statement:
“We are overcome with emotion on the passing of Bobby Cox, our treasured skipper.
“Bobby was the best manager to ever wear a Braves uniform. His Braves managerial legacy will never be matched. Bobby was a favorite among all in the baseball community, especially those who played for him.
“And while Bobby’s passion for the game was unparalleled, his love of baseball was exceeded only by his love for his family,” the Braves said. “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we send our sincerest condolences to his beloved wife, Pam, and their loving children and grandchildren.”
Mr. Cox led the Braves to 14 consecutive National League East titles from 1991-2005 (the 1994 season was lost to a labor dispute). Counting four years managing the Blue Jays, Mr. Cox finished with 2,504 wins over 29 full and partial seasons — fourth most in MLB history. He as a four time Manager the Year — 1985 (Blue Jays); 1991, 2004, 2005 (Braves).
Mr. Cox was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014. The Braves entered him into their franchise Hall of Fame in 2011, retiring his uniform No. 6.
My take: One of the best to ever do it. That run of division titles, despite massive roster turnover during that time, is unfathomable. Rest In Peace.
