The Raiders have informed quarterback Geno Smith that he will be released unless a trade can be worked out ahead of the new league year on March 11. The move opens up $8 million in cap space.
Smith played one season in Las Vegas under his former Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, who was terminated by the Raiders in January after a 3-14 record. Smith completed 67.4 percent of his passes for 3,025 yards, 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions, the latter the most in the NFL. He was also sacked an NFL-high 55 times in 15 games.
My take: Smith has returned to the backup phase of his NFL career, and at 35 he'll be a good one. He can't be fully judged on that disaster last year, with a brutal offensive line and no weapons, but his 2024 season had a 21/15 touchdown-to-interception ratio, despite a 70-percent completion percentage and over 4,300 yards passing.
